 If you have a blocked printhead and your nozzle check is missing lines then this step by step guide will show you how to unblock the dried ink in your printer. Right: a Canon iPF wide format printer head. You will need: small plastic box / bowl, cotton buds / q-tips, plastic cup, kitchen roll, Magic Bullet cleaning fluid & syringe (can be purchased below) |
Before attempting this cleaning process, we recommend you print a nozzle check first and keep this next to the printer. You can then see the improvement that this cleaning process has made. 
STEP 1 - Lifting Out The Print Head(s):
Select the cutter replacement option. This moves the printhead to allow easy access. Raise the head cover and move the two blue levers back to gain access to the print head.
Pull both or the one print heads you require out of the printer ensuring your fingers are kept clear of the electrical contacts, the ink inlet tubes and the nozzles.
Once removed, place the print head on a level surface.
STEP 2 - Soaking the Print Head:
Pour the magic bullet into a small container approximately 1/4 inch deep. Lay two q-tips as the photo on the right and lay the print head on the tips so the nozzle area is face down. Laying the printhead on the 2 q-tips ensures:
1) The nozzles do not touch the surface of the container.
2) The nozzles are immersed in the magic bullet fluid.
3) The electrical contacts do not come into contact with the magic bullet fluid.
Leave the print head in the solution for at least 2 hours (overnight for the most severe of blockages).
STEP 3 - Cleaning the Nozzles:
Once the nozzles have been soaked for the desired time, remove the printhead from the solution and use a cotton bud / q-tip soaked in magic bullet solution to wipe the nozzles clear of ink.
The nozzles are robust so you can put a fair amount of pressure on the nozzles to wipe away the ink - remember to be careful not to touch the electrical contacts.
Once the nozzles have been wiped down (and are now buffed to a shine!), dab the nozzles onto a kitchen roll to clear the water away. You will no doubt see a fair amount of ink on the kitchen towel.
STEP 4 - Re-insert and See How it Went:
Insert the print head(s) back into the printer and print and complete Canon wide format purge file that is included on the DVD. Then print a nozzle check to confirm you now have a perfect nozzle check.
If you have a complete nozzle check, you can now return to normal printing. However, if your nozzle check is still not complete, take out the print head as step 1 and proceed to step 5.
STEP 5 - Cleaning inside the Print Head:
Hold the print head securely ensuring that you do not touch the electrical contacts and hold this over a plastic cup.
Pull 10ml of Magic Bullet fluid into the syringe. With the syringe lever in the out position, Insert the syringe into one of the six nozzles and push the lever in so the magic bullet fluid flows through the print head and out from the print head nozzle and into the cup.
Repeat this process as required (for the nozzles that are not providing a perfect nozzle check).
STEP 6 - Remove Excess ink from Print Head:
With the syringe squeezed in, insert this into a nozzle that has been cleaned. Pull out on the syringe so that the ink from inside the print head flows into the syringe.
Squirt the ink that is in the syringe into the plastic cup. Repeat this process for the nozzles that have been cleaned in step 4.
STEP 7 - Clean up and Re-insert:
As you have done previously, use a cotton bud / que-tip soaked in magic bullet solution to wipe the nozzles clear of ink and dry the print head and nozzles with kitchen towel (again, be careful to avoid touching the electrical contacts.
Once the print head is clean and dry, re-insert into the print head. Print a complete Canon wide format purge file that is included on the DVD.
Print a nozzle check to confirm you now have a perfect ink flow. Purchase the magic bullet below:
As well as using your inkjet printer as often as you can, it is a good idea to print a nozzle check before each printing session. A complete nozzle check ensures that all nozzles are working your images should print with no banding and accurate colors.
TIP: If your nozzle check is not complete, the most likely cause of this is that you have run out of ink or your printer's head requires a clean. Once you have either topped up your ink or carried out a head clean, print another nozzle check to ensure your printer is functioning correctly.
With inkjet printing problem prevention is definitely better than problem solving. During periods of non-use, turn your printer on for a few minutes once every 3-4 days. When you turn a printer on, it goes through a mini priming-cycle, which keeps the underside of your printer moist and can prevent the build up of dried ink on the underside of your ink head. This can dry is paper dust settles on your print head.
TIP: If you go on vacation, why not leave your printer switched 'on' and connect your printer to the mains through an inexpensive timer switch, set to turn on for a few minutes every other day - when you return, your print head will be in perfect order, ready to print.

It is important not to fear the worst when a blockage occurs. It is vital that you select the correct cleaning method and to not "over clean"!
Generally, print workers discover a printer blockage when they observe banding or a lack of "punch" in their prints.
Once a less than perfect print is produced, you should follow these troubleshooting techniques:
1) CHECK YOU HAVE NOT RUN OUT OF INK!
If you are using single use cartridges, check your status monitor (located in your printer driver). This is only a rough guide and often the printer fails to alert you of a low cartridge ink level.
If you are using refillable cartridges, top these up to 90% full and if you are using a continuous ink system, ensure your ink reservoirs are at least two-thirds full.
2) CHECK YOUR PRINTER DRIVER SETTINGS.
Ensure that you have the correct print resolution (usually Highest Quality or 600dpi) and that you have the correct media type for your inkjet paper.
If you are still experiencing poor prints after you have confirmed your ink levels and printer settings, you will then need to find out how your individual printer nozzles are performing:
3) PRINT A NOZZLE CHECK
A perfect nozzle check should include as many complete sections as you have cartridges in your printer, appear uniformly staggered with clear and crisp text underneath. This is printed from your Printer Utilities section in your printer driver.

Incomplete Canon iPF Printer Nozzle Check
If your nozzle check is incomplete (as in the right image), use the "Clean" function in your printer utility. This may take a few minutes to complete. Once the clean has finished, print another nozzle check to discover how well this has worked. If the nozzle check is now complete (as the left image) you can now start printing. If the nozzle check is still incomplete, carry out no more than 2 head cleans.
In the more up to date printers, there is also an "Automatic Nozzle Check and Head Clean". This is a more intense cleaning cycle so we only recommend this if your nozzle check is less than 50% complete.
4) PERFORM AN AUTO-HEAD ALIGNMENT
In very rare cases, if your nozzles are not uniformly staggered, you can correct this using the Auto Head alignment. (Performed in printer drivers utility).
5) IF THE NOZZLE CHECK IS MISSING IN THE SAME PLACE EACH TIME
In our experience, if your nozzle check is missing in the same place each time, the print head itself is at fault and the likely cause is ink that has dried outside the print head. If your nozzle check is variable, the likely cause is that air is entering the ink system, usually due to the cartridge failing to make an air-tight seal with the printer. Although often air can enter through internal splits in the ink lines, damper or connections. So if you have a variable nozzle check, we advise changing the suspect cartridge(s). This is particularly useful when printing from non-Adobe Photoshop applications, which do not support colour management.

Printer purge files are areas of a solid color (or a selection of colors) that can get clear a blocked printer without having to resort to printer cleaning cycles. For more severe blockages (where your nozzle check is missing in the same places each time), we recommend you carry out a combination of printing purge files (individual or complete depending on the color(s) that are missing) with cleaning the printer using the Magic Bullet cleaning fluid explained below. This combination means you are softening the ink that has dried inside your printer using the Magic Bullet fluid and then pushing the ink through using the purge file.
